Belmond Savute Elephant Lodge

Overview

Light footprint luxury

In Chobe National Park, on the edge of the Savute Channel’s unpredictable waters, this light footprint luxury lodge takes its name from the pachyderms which are often found gathered here.

Savute Elephant Lodge has 12 luxurious tented rooms, with handcrafted four-poster beds opening out onto private terrace areas where you can watch the wildlife action unfold below.

A convivial indoor-outdoor lounge space and swimming pool sit at the heart of the lodge, with a viewing hide beneath a fabulous spot for photographing elephants, hyenas and leopards gather at the watering hole for their daily drink.

    Bushmen paintings

Out in the bush, where rocks rear up among stony hills you will find a collection of paintings that take your breath away. These works by Bushmen are thought to be more than 1,500 years old—beautiful images of elephant, giraffe, sable and eland antelope.

Footprint

The lodge has a state-of-the-art solar farm of 665 panels and a Tesla battery system (one of the first in Botswana) which has cut fossil fuel consumption by approximately 90%. It also has its own anaerobic sewage treatment plant, replaced the gas-fired hot water heaters with power-efficient thermodynamic geysers for each of the guest rooms, and put in an automated biodigester (the first of its kind in Botswana). The machine processes five tons of kitchen food waste monthly and turns this into compost, which is then bagged and used in local community-based farming initiatives.
