Botswana
The Okavango Delta and Central Kalahari
Sandwiched in the middle of Southern Africa, Botswana would be little more than a flat desert were it not for the waters of the Okavango River annually pouring in from Angola and spilling out over the Kalahari to form the world’s largest inland delta.
This creates a huge, incredibly dynamic ecosystem that’s a haven for wildlife and one of Africa’s very best safari experiences. Elephants and buffalos in their thousands, and predators such as leopards, lions and African wild dogs thriving, with an exciting mix of land and water-based activities.
To the south, the semi-arid stretches of the Central Kalahari and great salt pans of the Makgadikgadi, the remnants of an ancient lake. Here the experience is about the otherworldly landscapes and the people who have long called this home. Here you’ll be guided by Zu/’hoasi Bushmen who can trace their roots here back more than 100,000 years.
Part of why the country has been so successful in protecting its wildlife and ecosystems is its model of tourism, aiming unashamedly at Botswana’s luxury safari audience, with a small number of fabulously opulent lodges and camps – some of Africa’s finest – that support ambitious conservation work while keeping the sense of remote wilderness intact. For those after something a little more down to earth, we also work with low impact mobile camps that are big on experience, perfect for families or couples seeking complete privacy.
