The Serengeti

Sayari Camp

Overview

The Golden Serengeti

With the Mara River right on its doorstep, Sayari Camp is in the prime location to witness the world-famous river crossings of the Great Migration. But migration or not, the stunning wilderness of the Serengeti around will never disappoint.

The camp itself has been carefully designed to blend seamlessly into the surrounding golden plains. You will find comfort in bright and spacious suites, with walk-in showers, alfresco tubs and private balconies. Both of the lounge and dining areas provide a spot for you to unwind outside and to enjoy a delicious meal. The infinity pool has impressive Serengeti views – it is the perfect spot to spend a lazy afternoon gazing out over the game-filled plains.

After a day in the wilderness, retire to the warmth of the fireplace or the quiet library with a drink from the campsite’s very own solar-powered microbrewery (an East African first) and share safari tales late into the night. After relaxing in such superb comfort in the world’s premier wildlife reserve, you’ll be rested and ready for all the adventures the next day will bring.

Experiences

  • Sayari Camp Seregeti game drive

    Game Drive

Game drives leave early in the morning and again in the late afternoon, when the temperatures are cooler and animals are most active. There is plenty of wildlife around even when the migration is not, including lions and cheetahs. You might see elephants and rhinos and even leopards lurking in the riverine forests.

  • Sayari Camp Seregeti community

    Cultural Visits

Learn more about local Kuria culture in the nearby Merenga village. Stop off at the community vegetable gardens — part of a sustainable development programme managed by the camp — and collect fresh produce for your dinner that night.

  • Sayari Camp Seregeti hot air baloon

    Hot-air balloon rider

A hot-air balloon safari sees you soaring above the Serengeti plains as the sun rises in the early morning. During migration season, this is a great way to appreciate the full scope of the herds.

Conservation

Northern Serengeti was an area plagued by bushmeat poaching. With no other means of livelihood for the surrounding communities, hunting the abundant wildlife was common practice. However the camp helps by providing alternative livelihoods and to date has donated over $100,000 to assist local NGO Honeyguide in anti-poaching operations through a canine tracker team.

Community & Culture

The arrival of the camp secured the long-term conservation of this region and created employment opportunities for many in the communities on the park’s boundary. Many of the camp’s original team were former poachers. Fifteen years on, Sayari has played a pivotal role in creating a conservation economy in the northern Serengeti. The camp is entirely Tanzanian run and of the 55 staff, 80 percent are from local communities. A US$5 per person, per night conservation contribution goes toward local community projects.

Footprint

Asilia has been carbon neutral since 2009 and strives to develop practical ways to further reduce its footprint. Sayari continues that tradition by introducing the first solar-powered microbrewery in the bush. The new brewery makes beer and soft drinks on site, as well as purifying water and producing sparkling water. By doing so it removes the need for plastic bottles and cans in camp, not only reducing waste, but also reducing the transport carbon footprint.
