The History of South Luangwa National Park

South Luangwa National Park was established as a game reserve in 1938 and later designated a national park in 1972. Renowned for its rich wildlife and diverse ecosystems, it’s often considered one of Africa's premier safari destinations.

The park gained international recognition for its walking safaris. These tours were originated by Norman Carr, who was originally a ranger when the park was still a game reserve in the 1940s. Carr recognised the limitations of the early hunting safari and pioneered a more immersive wildlife experience amidst stunning landscapes to increase tourism and promote species conservation.

The shift to walking safaris and conservation, alongside the vital CITES ban on world ivory trade, has allowed the park to establish a remarkably stable wildlife population.

Best Time to Visit South Luangwa National Park

The best time to visit South Luangwa National Park largely depends on what you wish to see and experience. The park has both distinct wet and dry seasons, each offering unique opportunities for exploration.

Dry Season - May to October

Average Temperature: 23°C

Average Daily Rainfall: 3mm

The dry season is the most popular time for safaris in South Luangwa. During this period, the park sees little to no rainfall, and the bush thins out, making it easier to spot wildlife. As water sources become scarce, animals congregate around the Luangwa River and other remaining waterholes, providing excellent game-viewing opportunities.

This is also the best time for walking safaris, as the weather is cooler, and the risk of getting caught in a rainstorm is minimal. The dry season also offers stunning photographic opportunities thanks to its clear skies and dramatic sunsets.

Wet Season - November to April

Average Temperature: 26°C

Average Daily Rainfall: 111mm

The wet season, also known as the "Emerald Season," transforms the park into a lush, green paradise. While the rains can make some areas less accessible, this period offers a different kind of beauty, with plush landscapes and a fabulous population of birdlife. The park is quieter during this time, allowing for a more intimate safari experience, although many camps close between January and March.

During the Emerald Season, migratory birds flock to the park, and it is prime time for birdwatchers, who will be rewarded with over 400 bird species to spot. The Carmine bee-eaters, often seen nesting in the riverbanks during the dry season, are a particular highlight. Other notable species include the African fish eagle, crowned cranes, and the endangered Pel’s fishing owl.

Additionally, the wet season is the calving period for many animals, making it an excellent time to witness the arrival of newborns.

Wildlife in South Luangwa National Park

South Luangwa National Park is often referred to as one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, and with good reason. The park is home to an impressive array of wildlife, making it a must-visit for animal enthusiasts.

South Luangwa is famous for its large populations of elephants, buffalo, and hippos. These animals are commonly seen along the banks of the Luangwa River. The park is also home to lions and hosts one of the highest densities of leopards in Africa. Sightings of these big cats are frequent, especially during night drives, which are a speciality of South Luangwa.

The park is also known for its endemic species, such as Thornicroft’s giraffe, Crawshay’s zebra, and Cookson’s wildebeest, which are not found in other parts of Zambia or Africa. The park’s diverse habitats also support species like puku, kudu, impala, and the occasional wild dog.
