A wonderful ecolodge surrounded by the vast wilderness of the Kalama Community Conservancy and Samburu County.
The only lodge in the protected 80,000-hectare area, spot giant herds of elephants coming to drink at the waterholes, leopards stalking rocky outcrops, packs of African wild and local specialities such as Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and gerenuk or game drives and walks. But the real joy of Saruni Samburu is the culture and community here. Your guides and camp staff are local Samburu who are passionate about their land and their culture – the best possible guides in this very special place.
The rolling hills of Laikipia were once prime ranching land. Today, many have been restored to their wild natural state and are a haven for endangered species, such as Borana and Lewa, neighbouring private conservancies who removed their fences to create a beautiful 376 square kilometre sanctuary. This is arguably the best place in all of Africa to encounter white and black rhino who thrive here in numbers seen nowhere else, most thrillingly on foot accompanied by a ranger. You can also explore on game drives, horseback and mountain bike, and visit local community projects supported by your lodge.
Discover one of Africa’s most important conservation and wilderness areas. The Maasai Mara hosts an astounding diversity and density of wildlife year-round, especially lions, leopards, cheetahs and elephants. Between July and October, millions of wildebeests and zebras cross from the Serengeti in Tanzania to create an awe-inspiring natural spectacle known as the Great Migration.
Based out of a safari camp on a community-owned conservancy, you’ll get to enjoy game drives without the national park’s crowds, as well as enjoying the freedom to explore on guided safari walks and night excursions to spot nocturnal species. It also means you are directly supporting local communities and conservation through your stay, and get to meet the Maasai who are sharing their land with you.
