Gorilla trekking in Africa

Meet the mountain gorillas

Trekking through the jungle-clad mountains for a face-to-face encounter with a troop of gorillas is one of the most incredible wildlife experiences on earth. Spending an hour with these magnificent animals – so like ourselves – as they play and feed is as humbling as it is and unforgettable.

It was mesmerising to just sit and observe them – and see all their human-like characteristics. What an absolute privilege it is to see mountain gorillas interacting with each other in the wild, just as they should be.

Up close with Africa's great apes

Astoundingly gentle, awe-inspiring in stature and in so many ways, much like ourselves - an encounter with mountain gorillas is one of the most thrilling experiences you can have, not only in Africa, but anywhere in the world.

Choose between the four national parks in central Africa where the world's 1,000-or-so mountain gorillas call home - Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

This is truly a species that has been brought back from the brink - an encouraging conservation success story. In the 1980s, it was estimated that there were only 250 mountain gorillas left globally, but thanks to investment in rangers and park patrols, the population has been steadily rising ever since. The income from strictly limited permits makes this investment possible, so taking part in a gorilla trek is a direct way you can invest in much-needed conservation efforts and community development.

Our Travel Researchers will always match a gorilla experience to your exact requirements, considering fitness, priorities, budget, and what else you would like to do on your trip. From the big cats of Akagera National Park in Rwanda, hiking in Uganda's remote Rwenzori Mountains National Park, or combining it with a safari in the Serengeti, East Africa has much more to explore while you are there, so get in touch to start planning.
