Epic islands where the Pacific and Indian Oceans meet

Spread east to west over some 5000km between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, Indonesia’s 17,000 islands are as beautiful and varied as they are numerous.

Across the archipelago, find over 600 ethnic groups speaking more than 700 languages (only neighbouring Papua New Guinea has more). The national motto is Bhinekka Tunggal Ika, meaning 'Unity in Diversity', and you’ll soon discover how this applies to more than the people here, with an astounding array of life found both above and below the waves.

To the east, the large islands of Sumatra and Indonesia’s portion of Borneo have precious tropical rainforest home to orangutans, rhinos, elephants and tigers. All endangered with their vital habitats under pressure, travel can play a role in ensuring these ecosystems are worth more kept intact.

From Java, where most of Indonesia’s population lives alongside towering stratovolcanoes, follow the Sunda Islands over the likes of bustling Bali, untouched Sumba and the dragons of Komodo. And in the far west, off New Guinea’s Bird's Head Peninsula, the remote limestone islands of Raja Ampat host the richest coral reef ecosystem on earth. A dazzle of fish, technicolour corals, countless sharks and clear waters make for a diver’s paradise.

When to visit Indonesia

For most of the Indonesian Archipelago’s islands, the best time to visit is during the dry season between April and October. Further east for Raja Ampat and West Papua, the best months, especially for diving, are between October and May.
