Tierra Chiloé

Overview

Island adventure

On the east coast of the island, Tierra Chiloé is a contemporary architectural gem inspired by traditional local stilt houses.

Two wings are perched upon concrete legs looking out to the bay, giving each of the 24 rooms fabulous views. Furniture and art have been created by Chilean artists together with local craftsmen, hinting at Chiloé's fascinating folklore.

There are more wonderful vistas from the spa, outdoor swimming pool and beautiful restaurant where the celebration of all things local continues. A stay here is all about exploring the island's landscapes and culture, be it by bike, kayak, boat or horseback, returning to unwind in luxury.

Community & Culture

Tierra Chiloé shares a strong link with the local community, many of whom work with them – from the slippers provided for each guest, hand-knitted by neighbours, to working with local farmers who supplement the organic harvest from the lodge's orchards and vegetable gardens.

Conservation

The hotel is set beside the Pullao Wetlands which are home to a variety of shorebirds. Spend some time looking and you could spot curved-billed curlews, Hudsonian godwits, Chilean flamingos, Chilean plovers and black-necked swans. Together with the Center for Conservation and Study of Natural Heritage (CECPAN), the lodge aims to promote the sustainable management and protection of the wetlands. Almost half of the land on which the lodge stands has been planted with fruit, vegetable and herbs, including native plants like hazelnut, nalca and rosehip. The hotel’s terrace has large wicker baskets of flowers which you’ll sometimes find decorating the dishes.

Footprint

One of the most unique things about Tierra Chiloé is its striking architecture. The local community assisted with its construction and many of them are still part of the hotel’s team. During a study of the land conditions, natural energy sources were identified, which in turn informed the design of the building. The structure is positioned in such a way that the light and heat of the sun is absorbed through thermopane windows. Natural cross-ventilation helps keep the air inside fresh, and efficient lighting helps to reduce the use of fossil fuels. The hotel is heated using renewable biomass energy.
