Johannesburg

The Peech Hotel

Overview

Afrocentric chic

Surrounded by a hectare of verdant gardens in the upmarket suburb of Melrose, The Peech stands as one of Johannesburg’s best-loved boutique hotels.

Contemporary, Afrocentric and fun in feel, 32 rooms are split between the original 1950s home and a series of pavilions, including the striking Luxury Rooms and the two-bedroom Peech Villa. All are spacious and feature either a patio or terrace.

There are two restaurants. Garden is a relaxed bistro for guests serving light, seasonal organic cuisine, while Basalt is a highly regarded fine dining venue.

Independent with a proudly African character, the hotel champions responsible tourism by blending awareness for the environment and the community and is also Fair Trade Tourism certified.

Community & Culture

Wherever possible, The Peech aims to minimize its impact on the environment and while maximizing the positive impact on its local community. The Peech has been certified as a Fair Trade in Tourism hotel since 2010. This certification acknowledges hospitality establishments that adhere to specific criteria including fair wages and working conditions, fair distribution of benefits, ethical business practices, and respect for human rights, culture and the environment.

Little Eden is a charitable home located about 25 minutes from the hotel that does invaluable work caring for children and young adults with severe intellectual disabilities. The Peeche's support, which started in 2008, includes monetary donations from every bed night. The Peech also encourages guests to support Little Eden’s “Pack for a Purpose” initiative, which coordinates travellers bringing donations on their trip and leaving them at the hotel to pass to Little Eden.

Footprint

Reducing waste is managed using a Bokashi wet waste facility, garden composting and having dedicated recycling of paper, glass, tin and plastic packaging. The hotel’s probiotic waste is processed and recycled into fertiliser, which is then used in the hotel’s gardens. There is also have an on-site water bottling facility that provides drinking water for the bistro and rooms, which cuts out waste from plastic bottles and the energy used in transporting bottled water.

Outdoor pools are heated using solar power during cool months and as, as far as possible, produce in the restaurants is organic and locally sourced.
