South Luangwa National Park

Shawa Luangwa Camp

Overview

South Luangwa off-grid

Shawa Luangwa is situated on the eastern bank of the Luangwa River on a site hand-picked by Jacob Shawa, the camp’s legendary head guide and namesake.

Five pyramid tents are elevated off the ground with expansive views of the river and the park beyond, each with an en suite bathroom and a tub sunk into the decking. Two are connected by a raised walkway as a family unit. An open-air dining area, bar and swimming pool sit at the heart of the camp.

Completely off-grid and with silent electric Land Cruisers, explore the remote and game-rich Nsefu sector on drives and walks with Jacob or take the camp’s pontoon across into South Luangwa National Park

From this beautiful location, you can cross the river on a pontoon or boat and explore the prime game-viewing areas of the South Luangwa National Park.

Community & Culture

Green Safaris was born out of a deep connection with Africa’s untouched wild spaces and the wildlife and communities that call them home which underpins their commitment to conservation, empowerment and sustainability.

Empowering local people through community development is a strong element that runs through Green Safaris’ lodges and camps. While at Shawa Luangwa Camp, Project Luangwa representatives give guided tours of some of the incredible initiatives they have created to empower, educate, and protect the Luangwa area and communities, such as their secondary school where you can meet teachers and students and learn a little about what it is like to live in the Luangwa National Park.

Conservation

Green Safaris have set up a dedicated organization which actively supports a variety of conservation projects and local groups active in the areas where they operate. Taking great pride in educating guests and wherever possible whilst visiting their lodges, you can get involved in these conservations related activities by meeting researchers. Initiatives include Game Rangers International, Panthera, Hack the Poacher, Zambian Carnivore Project and the South Luangwa Conservation Society.

Footprint

Green Safaris’ properties have been designed and built in the most sustainable way, and to ensure they blend seamlessly into their specific habitat.

They have pioneered the use of electric game drive vehicles and the ‘silent safari’ experience, with Shawa Luangwa being the first camp in the area to use them.

Shawa Luangwa is run completely off-grid, designed in a way design maximising natural airflow, sunlight and shade. The tents are mounted on wooden decks built from locally sourced timber and fitted around existing trees in order to minimise environmental impact.
