Johannesburg

Saxon Hotel

Overview

Heritage meet contemporary luxury

Feeling more like a country estate than a city hotel, Johannesburg’s Saxon Hotel is an opulent sanctuary in leafy Sandhurst.

53 suites are split between the main hotel and villas tucked away in four hectares of peaceful gardens with a grand infinity pool as a focal point. Interiors that embrace a warm heritage and contemporary cool.

The dining options here are particularly of note, from locally inspired flavours at Qunu and relaxed Terrace to the fine dining experience at Grein. The wine cellar is here extremely well-stocked and more treats can be found in the spa.

Community & Culture

The Saxon is a recognised South African hotel and supports its local cultural heritage and development. As a highly respected patron of the arts, the hotel’s extensive art and artefact collection have been selected from both established and emerging artists from across Africa, Europe and the East. In tribute to its proudly South African heritage, the Saxon supports local artists, both established and emerging, with a collection of over 200 original artworks.

The Saxon has developed a people culture, where staff are encouraged to continually grow, learn and develop. The Saxon accepts a bi-annual intake of trainees in the kitchen, and across other competencies throughout the hotel. Over the years, many of the country’s certified sommeliers have been beneficiaries of this training program. Some of them have moved on to pursue international opportunities, to showcase the skills and knowledge they have acquired through the assistance of Saxon’s programme.

Footprint

The Saxon is committed to a comprehensive green efficiency programme, which includes well-managed recycling practices, organic gardening and environmentally friendly marketing collateral.

The hotel has an efficient recycling programme in place with an ongoing goal to reduce landfill volume by 25% each year and ultimately reaching a zero-landfill target. Energy supply and water usage are managed by smart meters to ensure maximum efficiency. The hotel makes use of two rainwater reservoirs for irrigation purposes with the use of four boreholes as a backup measure when required. The hotel gardens are all indigenous in respect to natural resources.

The hotel also proudly source items produced locally to support local development and culture but also to limit the carbon waste produced in transporting goods to the hotel. The kitchen makes use of our organic garden and sources sustainable items for inclusion in our menus across the hotel, sourced from local suppliers, growers and artisans who preserve traditional knowledge and techniques and who work with respect for the environment and animal welfare.
