Nyere National Park

Roho Ya Selous

Overview

The wild heart of Nyere

Roho ya Selous sits in the very heart of Nyerere National Park - formerly The Selous – a small, adventurous but thoroughly comfortable camp surrounded by a truly vast wilderness.

It has eight spacious tents tucked away in the forest with views through the foliage to hippos wallowing in the waterway that flows past. Each accommodation is an impressive 60 square metres with separate en suite bathrooms, outdoor showers, and beds that look out into the bush.

Relax in the open-sided, canvas-roofed dining or lounge areas while reading a book or keep an eye out for wildlife around the lake. In the afternoons, take a dip in the pool as giraffes amble by, returning from drives in the evening to gather around the campfire with fellow guests to share safari tales before hearty dinners under the stars.

    Boating and fishing

One of the things that separates Nyerere from other major Tanzanian parks is its boating safaris. From a safe distance, float past crocodiles on the sandbanks and hippos in the shallows, watching elephants come down to drink and birds nesting on the islands. Combine a boat safari with a spot of fishing – the rivers hold a good population of tiger fish and various types of catfish.

Community, culture and conservation

Asilia's purpose is to empower crucial wilderness areas in East Africa, benefitting people and nature alike. By making bold, and often pioneering, investments into areas like Nyere that are ecologically and economically vulnerable, they aim to turn these areas into viable conservation economies, benefitting both the local communities as well as the environment.

Asilia acknowledges that people and nature are inseparable partners, so we work closely with communities, authorities, NGOs and industry partners to achieve the best possible long-term outcomes for all concerned. Stays at their camps directly fund their foundation's conservation and community work across the region.

Footprint

Asilia, which has been carbon neutral since 2009, runs sustainable operations by installing solar power systems and solar water boilers in its camps. Their carbon offsetting includes safari vehicles, their global offices’ electricity usage and even international flights taken by management. They have reduced their plastic waste by 63% over the last four years. Instead of plastic bottles, guests are given personalized stainless steel bottles. They eliminated single-use plastics in 2018 and even cling film and earbuds are not allowed in camp.

Roho Ya Selous is built with a low environmental footprint and blends in with the local surrounding with minimized footprint. The camp is powered by solar energy which is fixed with a power inverter battery system with a generator used only as a backup. They also utilize sustainable water and waste management processes.
