Community & Culture

The Mount Nelson Hotel supports a number of organizations and scholarships including Red Cross Children Hospice and St Luke's Hospice. Excess food is donated to Cape Town Multi-Services Centre which redistributes our surplus food to needy school children, the elderly, and young unemployed youth. The hotel's chefs also support Souper troopers donating soup to the homeless and the poor every month. During the festive season, the hotel tries to encourage guests to donate unwanted toys, clothes, and educational goods which they give to James House – an organization that provides shelter and protection and basic needs for underprivileged children.

Footprint

The hotel has undergone a number of strategies to reduce it's carbon footprint from banning single-use plastics to setting up their own beehives. Perhaps the most innovative strategy was the installation of its 'vermiculture' waste unit. Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel was the first luxury hotel in South Africa to practice ‘vermiculture’. The hotel’s ‘worm farm’ was awarded ‘Best Single Resource Management System – Waste’ in the Responsible Tourism Awards. A custom designed worm farm was established on the hotel property to manage the disposal of much of the hotel’s organic waste.

Conservation

The hotel is one of the founding partners of www.therhinosarecoming.org, a creative spectacular outdoor rhino art exhibition which is raising funds for Stop Rhino Poaching
