Matetsi Victoria Falls

Overview

Safari on the Upper Zambezi

Combine the splendour of Victoria Falls with an exciting safari experience at Matetsi. You’re spoilt for choice here with 27km of private river frontage and 50,000 hectares of private wildlife concession.

In your riverside suite (or exclusive-use villa) you’re surrounded by elegant wood and copper finishes, where repurposed materials and local artisanal skills have been used to create contemporary spaces which fit perfectly into the surrounding landscape. What better place to watch the wallowing hippos and elephants gathering to drink than from your plunge pool.

Spend a morning exploring the thundering falls with a private guide, afternoon canoeing on the meandering upper Zambezi or visiting a local village, then head out for spectacular sundowners and a night time game drive.

This expansive conservation area has no fences, allowing wildlife to roam freely, so it offers you amazing viewing opportunities on game drives and optional walking safaris. The area is particularly known for large herds of elephants and buffaloes as well as the lions that prey on them, especially during the dry season. If you’re staying for a longer period you can enjoy full day drives which include lunch out in the bush.

    After dark

Community & Culture

In addition to showcasing all Zimbabwe’s natural beauty, Matetsi also celebrates the country’s people. The lodge was designed in collaboration with a Zimbabwean architectural designer as well as local artists and craftsmen. The jobs created on the property have helped grow opportunities for local communities.

Local music and dance play an important role at Matetsi, and you’re encouraged to go on a village visit and homestead tour where you’ll learn more about Zimbabwean culture.

Matetsi has partnered with Greenline Africa Trust to help develop marginalized communities. One of their endeavors is the Gogo Project which supports grandmothers who take care of orphaned and vulnerable children.

Conservation

The sustainably protected Matetsi Private Game Reserve consists of a variety of ecosystems and is home to many flora and fauna. The family owners are just a few years into a 50-year lease on the area and their presence has helped to deter illegal hunters and poachers. The area is frequently swept for wire-snares and traps. An extensive road network allows for easy movement of patrols. Sixteen solar-powered watering holes have also been created aiding the return of wildlife to the area.

Footprint

Matetsi pays deliberate attention to conserving natural resources, having minimal environmental impact and building awareness in neighbouring communities. The lodge was built on the footprints of a pre-existing lodge and materials were either re-used or sourced locally. Solar-powered geysers, minimal single-use plastics and recycled waste all contribute towards the team’s attempt to reduce their carbon footprint.
