Zanzibar Island

Matemwe Retreat

Overview

Beachside seclusions

On Zanzibar’s northeastern coast, Matemwe Retreat is an exclusive retreat on a secluded stretch of beach perfectly situated opposite the spectacular diving and snorkelling reefs of the Mnemba Atoll.

The Retreat has just four exclusive private villas set under palms overlooking the Indian Ocean. The ground floor of each features a private bar area, an airy bedroom and en suite bathroom with romantic sunken bathtubs. Outdoors, private lounge areas invite you to make the most of the tropical climate while rooftop decks have a plunge pool with the best views of all.

In the evening, watch as the dhows sail back with their catch and savour dinner cooked by your private chef under the stars or stroll down to the main lodge for a seafood buffet in the open-air restaurant.

Head out in kayaks and paddle around the island’s scenic north-eastern coastline, learn how to kitesurfing, or try your hand at fishing with the locals.

Conservation

The lodge is directly involved in the conservation and monitoring of two endangered turtle species, the green turtle and the rare hawksbill. In February and March, you can assist with the conservation of these ancient creatures who nest about 5km up the coast. During this time you may be able to witness turtles hatching from their nests.

Footprint

All our food is sourced locally (including fruit and vegetables), and seafood is bought from local suppliers who use sustainable techniques. This means, for example, that we do not buy net- or spear-caught fish but only that caught on lines. This reduces food miles and supports surrounding communities. The lodge is also involved in a local recycling scheme, and much of the waste is recycled and re-used.
