Ngorongoro and Serengeti

Lemala Mara & Ndutu Tented Camp

Overview

Simple, elegant seasonal camp

Lemala is a family-owned collection of safari camps known for offering an ecologically sensitive safari complimented by warm hospitality and an authentic “bush camp” feel.

Their Mara-Ndutu Tented Camp is a “seasonal camp”, meaning it moves around twice each year – much like the zebras and gazelles that follow the path of iconic wildebeest migration. From June to October the camp is known as Lemala Mara thanks to its front row seat to all the Mara River crossing action in the northern Serengeti. The camp then closes for a couple of weeks in November and moves south in December, reopening as Lemala Ndutu Camp, based in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area until March.

The camp itself is simple but elegant. The mobile canvas tents sit perched on raised decks, furnished with two queen-size beds and ensuite bathrooms with flush toilets and hot safari-style bucket showers. The communal area has a separate lounge with comfortable leather sofas, dining area and bar. In the evenings, gather around the campfire for pre-dinner drinks and canapes and share the safari stories of the day. All meals, house drinks, Wi-fi and laundry are complimentary.

Community & Culture

Lemala is passionate about supporting local communities in Tanzania. Most of their staff come from the surrounding communities and they support a number of women’s empowerment, leadership and internship initiatives. They also support a number of local schools, an orphanage and homeless and women’s shelters. Lemala also created a hugely successful program to make and donate reusable sanitary pads to young village girls in rural areas who would otherwise be absent from school each month.

Conservation

Lemala is committed to supporting conservation, education and empowerment in the reserves and communities around the camps. They have eliminated all single use plastic water bottles and provide clean drinking water using reverse osmosis water treatment plants. Plastic straws are also banned. The team consistently removes plastic bottles and litter from inside the national parks which is then upcycled into school desks and chairs. Money raised through the sale of these items then goes towards building a new Primary School at Eluway.

Footprint

The camps operate 100% off the grid with zero emissions and fuel usage, using solar energy. The tents are built on raised wooden decks to minimise their footprint. Food and supplies are sourced locally to ensure local communities reap the benefits. Only a small portion of our dry goods are imported and only those essential to maintain our high standards of hospitality. 30% of the steel used to build the camps is recycled steel from scrap metal.
