Ruaha National Park

Kigelia Ruaha

Overview

Simple, remote, wild

This is a camp for those after a real wilderness escape with personal hosting and excellent game viewing . Discover the humbling solitude of ancient baobabs and relish the chance to see big cats and large herds elephants. Here you also have the chance to go on walks and night drives, revealing even more of what Ruaha has to offer.

The focus at Kigelia Ruaha is on experiencing the beauty of nature and feeling at home. Its rustic charm is perfect for those who don’t need all the luxury trimmings, but who do enjoy having an attentive team on hand to ensure they are comfortable.

Beneath the boughs of the sausage tree (Kigelia Africana) you’ll find six airy tents. The camp’s simplicity means that it doesn’t detract from the landscape in which it is set. Allow yourself to drift off to sleep with the calls of leopards in the distance, and rise as the dappled sunlight dances across the canvas.

    Game drives

Head out with a Nomad guide in an open vehicle, armed with your camera, to immerse yourself in the wild of Ruaha. Every drive is different, offering exciting moments and time for quiet reflection in close proximity to the area’s fascinating creatures. Bird watching is also particularly rewarding, so keep your eyes on the bush and skies.

    Game walks

You’re not likely to get another opportunity to hug a massive baobab. On a game walk you’ll get up closer to these unusual trees and discover the reptiles, bats and owls which live in their crevices. This is just one of the astounding things you’ll experience out in the bush on foot.

    Night drives

Venture out after dark to spot creatures which are usually in hiding during the day. Some of the nocturnal animals you might be fortunate to see include genets, civets and porcupines. Also look out for lions and leopards. These night drives need to be booked ahead of time.

Community & Culture

Nomad was founded on the belief that to make a meaningful contribution to the conservation of our wildlife, they must also take care of the needs of our people, making sure that it is them that feel the benefit from keeping wild places safe.. Nomad make use of their reach and logistics; planes, cars, camps and teams, to reach deep into some of the most remote parts of Tanzania with health and education outreach. All of the profits from massage treatments and camp shops goes to our projects, and all of this is managed by a full time CSR Manager and supported by camp teams.

Conservation

Around 10% of Africa’s remaining lions live in Ruaha National Park, and Oxford University’s Ruaha Carnivore Project (RCP) focuses on developing conservation strategies for them and the area’s other large carnivores. RCP is headed up by Amy Dickman, recipient of the Tusk Trust Conservation Award in 2014. Together with local communities the RCP team uses a variety of strategies to protect lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs and hyenas. Village outreach programmes and film nights raise awareness. GPS collars warn of possible conflicts between animals and humans, and predator-proof enclosures help minimize these. Kigelia Ruaha has recently helped the project buy new camera traps and helped fund predator proofing for livestock enclosures. If you’re interested to learn more, you can meet the RCP team and find out how you can support what they do during your stay.
