Afro-Caribbean cool
Close to the beach town of Puerto Viejo, a laidback place with an Afro-Caribbean feel where you’ll hear Patois, English and Spanish spoken on the streets, and between two coastal national parks, the Hotel Aguas Claras is a fabulous spot from which to discover the southeast corner of Costa Rica.
Part luxury beachside retreat, part art project, all built with sustainability in mind, the historic Victorian building has been lovingly restored by the mother-daughter team with a chic and creative flair. Six luxury bungalows, six suites and the two-story Caribbean House are decked out with curated artworks, reclaimed furniture and bursts of colour.
Located by the pool in the tropical gardens, the restaurant here is one of the region’s very best, while there is a boutique beach club close to the sands. Bicycles and snorkelling kit is free to borrow for a little self-guided exploration.

Hotel Aguas Claras believes that the concept of ‘local’ is the key to sustainable hospitality, to they hire local, buy local, and invest in the community.
Staff here are all Costa Rican, predominantly from the local area, with the hotel actively investing in training, upskilling and healthcare. They also make a conscious effort to source as many products as we can from as close to home as possible.
Many schools in this rural area of Costa Rica have limited resources. One of them is Manzanillo School which we support through two projects. The first works to maintain and improve basic school-building infrastructure. The second focuses on education programs that teach the young students about the importance of environmental stewardship, inspiring them to protect their surroundings.
