Kaikōura

Hapuku Lodge + Tree Houses

Overview

Treetop ocean views

The project of a family of architects drawn here to farm and surf, Hapuku Lodge + Tree Houses is a uniquely designed and friendly lodge on a rugged stretch of coastline a short way north of the eco-marine town of Kaikoura.

There are five treehouses with fabulous views from 10 metres up in a canopy of kanuka trees, deep soaking tubs and cosy fireplaces. Further suites and rooms are in the lodge and the Olive House – taking over the old olive press – can accommodate three couples or large families.

The lodge’s chef has a passion for local produce, taking care of the organic gardens and sourcing provisions directly from farmers and fishermen to create celebrated seasonal menus.

    At the lodge

There’s plenty to do at lodge, including mountain biking, a variety of walks, botanical tours, ocean swims or learn to surf at famed Mangamaunu surf break which drew the family here to found the lodge back in the 1990s.

Footprint

In 2002 Kaikoura, as a township, was the first local authority in the world to become a Green Globe certified community. In addition, nearly every local operator has a green mission threaded through their operations, caring for the environment which brings tourists from all over the world.

Hapuku Lodge's aim is to help nurture this unique environment, restoring it through planting native trees, re-introducing native birds, and being sustainable in our operations.

Beyond tree planting, their eco-efforts include sourcing as much as possible of our ingredients and products from local farmers and purveyors, running an organic kitchen garden and working to reduce, recycle and compost with a goal of becoming a zero-waste community.
