Giraffe Manor

Overview

Share breakfast with Rothschild’s giraffes

One of the most unforgettable experiences you can have while visiting Kenya is breakfast with the giraffes at Giraffe Manor in Nairobi. This peaceful retreat is the perfect place to either start or finish your East African safari experience.

The 140 acre sanctuary is located in the lush suburbs of Langata and is home to endangered Rothschild’s giraffes. The special breakfast-time close encounters see the semi-habituated giraffes slip their heads through the windows while you’re enjoying the morning sunshine. And they’re always eager to be hand-fed.

Split equally between the historic house and new Garden Manor, 12 suites have been designed to retain the building’s original 1930’s character and celebrate its history, from the art deco bathrooms to antique furniture.

    Breakfast with the giraffes

Sitting down to breakfast with giraffes is certainly a unique experience. You’ll either have breakfast in the main manor or in the Garden Manor breakfast room, depending on where you are staying. Their long tongues won’t be after your breakfast though, but rather dried pellets of grass, molasses and corn.

    AFEW Giraffe Centre

You’ll be able to visit the AFEW Giraffe Centre which is just across the lawn from the house. Here you can learn about the rare Rothschild’s giraffe and follow a short nature trail.

Community & Culture

Through the Footprint Foundation, a number of conservation, health and education projects are supported. These benefit both the communities and the wildlife.

Conservation

The Safari Collection is passionate about sustainability and giving back. They aim to be low impact and community and conservation driven. It was originally built in the 1930s as a home, and in the 70s the new owners Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville started a campaign to protect the Rothschild’s giraffe. That legacy survives today with many of the offspring of the resident giraffes being released into the wild. Since the beginning of the project, numbers have increased from around 100 to some 1,800.

For each guest who stays at Giraffe Manor, The Safari Collection makes a donation to AFEW and their conservation projects. You can join the Giraffe Manor sponsorship programme and contribute directly to saving the gentle creatures.
