Maasai Mara Naboisho Conservancy

Dorobo Mobile Camp

Overview

Escape, Explore, Experience Wild

Inspired by the nomadic wanderings of the Maasai’s hunter-gatherers, the Dorobo people, this eco-friendly mobile camp offers a truly memorable experience focused on the simpler things in life. It’s a place to disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with nature and wildlife.

Dorobo Mobile Camp comprises just five canvas domed tents with two single beds with soft mattresses, quality linen and blankets for a comfortable night’s sleep, lit by solar lanterns. Ablution facilities in camp include enclosed hot-water bucket showers and an outdoor toilet.

One of our favourite things about Kenya’s Mara Naboisho Conservancy is that you can escape the crowds and explore off the beaten track. This private, community-owned conservancy means additional activities such as walking safaris, off roading and night drives are permitted. The conservancy is renowned for its abundant game and has the highest number of lions in Africa.

Your days are generally spent wandering the savannah with your highly experienced Maasai guide who will share with you some of Nature’s most exhilarating encounters and treasures. After a thrilling walking safari, you can look forward to sundowners and a wholesome bush dinner, followed by storytelling and stargazing around the fire.

Community & culture

The Basecamp Explorer Foundation was established to fight the extinction of wildlife, working in close partnership with the local Maasai communities who own and inhabit the land. Basecamp Maasai Brand (BMB) is an economic empowerment initiative that currently supports over 150 Maasai women aged 17 to 60 years. This income generating activity preserves traditional Maasai cultural beading practices and traditions from Basecamp Masai Mara Camp.

Conservation

Basecamp Explorer is all about responsible, sustainable tourism. They invest heavily into conservation projects including reforestation, waste management and empowering women and youth. They are committed to securing and protecting land and corridors necessary for wildlife to flourish in the Masai Mara–Serengeti ecosystem.

Footprint

In 2010, Basecamp was instrumental in the formation of Mara Naboisho Conservancy, a 50,000-acre conservancy that safeguards the pristine Mara Serengeti ecosystem from subdivision and further degradation. Naboisho Conservancy is now home to over 70 identified lions, 220 recorded bird species and directly benefits about 600 Maasai families through revenue generated as lease fees. Basecamp recycles its solid waste and extends its program of waste collection, management and recycling to benefit the local communities. Basecamp Explorer has planted countless trees to help establish an actual forest biome in the Talek region, simultaneously making their operation carbon positive.
