Mara Naboisho Conservancy

Basecamp Leopard Hill

Overview

Savannah star beds

In the heart of Mara Naboisho Conservancy, surrounded by Kenyan savannah, Leopard Hill is a contemporary safari camp at one with the wilderness.

There are six tents with expansive views over the nearby waterholes and sunrise through their roll-up sides and decking areas. Each has indoor and outdoor showers, a fireplace and, as a pièce de résistance, a motorized roof that retracts to reveal the stars at the touch of a button.

The camp is centered around spacious lounge and dining areas where you’ll find a bar and library. Hearty dinners of local produce are enjoyed outdoors whenever possible.

    Game drives

Game drives are usually conducted in the early mornings, late afternoon or at night since these are the coolest times of the day when most animals are more active. During the game drive, knowledgeable Maasai guides will introduce you to life in the savannah and share their infinite knowledge about African wildlife.

Community & Culture

Basecamp Explorer Foundation is a non-profit organization working with local communities to safeguard nature. Over a decade of working closely with the Maasai community, Basecamp Explorer has worked towards a financially and socially sustainable model to protect this vital ecosystem.

The camp is located on Naboisho, a community-owned nature conservancy is owned by the Maasai but leased by lodges and camps. Both the landowners and the tourism partners have an equal representation at the board. The model is rooted in a firm belief that the only way to achieve long-term coexistence between people, livestock and wildlife is through close cooperation with local people. At the same time, such a model of “Coming Together” is lifting a larger number of marginalized people out of poverty and through long term leases and community-based capacity building, as well as through creating direct and indirect employment opportunities for members of the community and supporting local businesses and farmers.

The foundation also supports a number of community projects, notable those empowering local women. The camp also actively hires and trains female guides, a traditionally male dominated profession.

Conservation

25% of income goes directly into conservation efforts in the reserve. Bordering the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Naboisho benefits from the same expansive landscapes and variety of wildlife, but without the crowds. The density of lions within Naboisho is one of the highest globally and is a haven for elephants.

Footprint

The camp is guided by an environmental policy in which it recognizes its responsibility to the environment far beyond legal and regulatory requirements, aiming to reduce its environmental impact and continually improve its environmental performance as an integral part of its business.

Solar panels are the main source of energy with a generator only used as a backup. Solar systems also heat water for guest rooms and the kitchens, with water sourced from a borehole and treated responsibly after use. The camp's program of waste collection, management and recycling has been extended to benefit the local communities.
