Babylonstoren

Overview

Immerse yourself in natures beauty

Babylonstoren is one of the oldest Cape Dutch Farms in South Africa, dating back to 1692. The magnificent farmhouse sits in a 3.5 hectare garden surrounded by a fruit farm and vineyards which are bustling with life and colour.

There are nine suites in the Farmhouse, a stunning collection of 19 cottages spready around the grounds, and the beautiful 18th century Manor House which is ideal for larger groups and families. Adding sophisticated contemporary touches to the historic and homely Cape-Dutch architecture, this is a seriously stylish place. Together with the exceptional spa, celebrated dining and warm service, Babylonstoren is among our favourite spots in all Africa.

From rowing lakes to cycling between vegetable gardens, the property’s ‘farm-to-fork' experience takes every guest on a unique journey that aims to keep things simple and as true to the earth as possible. Wander through the grounds with one of Babylonstoren's experienced gardeners, while tasting, smelling and touching along the way. There are 200 hectares of this working farm to explore - or simply relax in the comfort of your cottage with a glass of Babylonstoren's award-winning wine.

Community & Culture

Babylonstoren places great value on the upliftment of the community which is why the Babylonstoren Trust was founded. The Trust raises funds for community projects such as the Learning Centre where our farmworkers’ children are cared for while their parents work in our vineyards and orchards. From pre-school to high school learners, they school is well equipped and provides a well-rounded experience which has seen a number of pupils excel and move into further education.

Conservation

The organic garden is home to birds, bees and insects – all critters are welcome and part of the ecosystem and protecting the diversity in the garden is also a key aim.

Cape honeybees are honoured workers on the Babylonstoren Farm and play a key role in pollinating many garden fruits, herbs and vegetables. The team provides a safe habitat where bees can build homes and find a variety of nutritious food and water sources.

Some six-legged creatures are vital when it comes to decomposing, pollination, seed dispersal, serving as a food source for insectivores and maintaining plant and animal community structures.

Footprint

Sustainability is at the heart of all processes at Babylonstoren. This ethos of treading as lightly as possible on the land has steered our recycling and sustainability system – an ongoing project that is constantly being evaluated and refined.

As well as almost all the food being locally grown, Babylonstoren’s ambitious approach to reduce its carbon footprint involved an inhouse industrial engineer and has included the development of sustainable packaging and recycling systems, while water consumption has been cut in half.
