Angama Mara

Overview

Endless views over the Masaai Mara

Set high above the Maasai Mara in Kenya you’ll discover the two camps of Angama Mara, arguably positioned in one of the most astounding places in Africa, on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, and offers you the most spectacular views.

Game viewing is fantastic all year round, with private access to the reserve. Your safari days will be tailor-made to suit your interests and energy levels. Not only are you treated to amazing animal sightings at Angama Mara, but you can also enjoy hot air ballooning, walking safaris and garden-to-table lunches in the Shamba.

Keen photographers can head out on photographic safaris and then edit their images in the lodge’s photographic studio. Art enthusiasts will enjoy the gallery of African art, jewellery and clothing, as well as the opportunity to visit a studio where local Maasai women created bespoke beaded items.

Community & Culture

The Angama Foundation raises funds to assist Partakilat Primary School with various projects and needs. Since 2015 the foundation has built three classrooms, student and teacher ablution facilities and accommodation for teachers. They have also donated 150 pairs of Shoes that Grows, over 100 desks, 300 backpacks filled with stationary and five 10,000-litre capacity water tanks. The foundation has also been involved in other projects in Partakilat, among them were building two Early Childhood Development classrooms, donating bookshelves to the school and constructing a dam to supply water to the school. There are future projects planned to help the school and others.

Conservation

The Angama Foundation works together with the Mara Conservancy to ensure the wellbeing of the Mara Triangle. That work will extend outwards to the rest of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem once the Triangle is fully sustainable. Livestock predation compensation and rhino monitoring are two of the matters they are focusing on to begin with. They also work with Collaring for Conservation, Mara Elephant Project and Mara Raptor Project. Angama Mara launched the Greatest Maasai Mara Photographer of the Year competition to showcase the reserve as one of the best year-round wildlife destinations.

Footprint

Angama has made a concerted effort to minimise their use of single-use plastics and installed a water bottling plant to produce cold and room temperate still water and sparkling water which goes into reusable glass bottles. This initiative has prevented the waste of some 75,000 plastic bottles over three years. Plastic bottles that are collected from the side of the road in the park are turned into EcoBricks which can be used as building blocks for raised beds in the Shamba.

A nominal nightly donation from guests goes towards the foundation making a difference in education, healthcare and conservation. If you’re interested in visiting any of the projects, your camp manager can make the arrangements for you.
