Community & Culture

Together with Africa Foundation, Crater Lodge has helped to invest over USD 420,000 since 2006 in community healthcare and education. Other projects they’re involved in include building ablution facilities for Misigyo Primary School and establishing a borehole at Kilimamoja Secondary School.

Promising students from local communities have been granted 35 tertiary education bursaries by Africa Foundation’s Community Leader’s Education Fund programme. And 1,400 children and adults from the area participated in the conservation-awareness lesson programme in 2019.

Conservation

For the past 23 years Crater Lodge has contributed to the conservation of the area through an annual disbursement to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority. &Beyond was a founding member of the Lionscape Coalition, which works towards securing a future for the continent’s wild lions. The coalition supports KopeLion, an organisation committed to solving the problem human and lion conflict in the area. In addition, 60,000 trees have been planted in the region over the last decade.

Footprint

The on-site water bottling system has helped to eliminate over 117,600 plastic water bottles a year. Instead, you’ll receive glass bottles in your food-to-go packs. Over two million litres of wastewater is recycled and reused. The lodge joined the Tanzania Electric Supply Company hydro-power thermal grid allowing them to make use of more renewable energy, and drastically reduce their carbon footprint as well as their diesel fuel consumption.
